Hey there, and welcome to the Powers Chiropractic podcast. I’m Dr. Powers, and today we’re talking about something we know many of you will soon be diving into

—summer activities!

Whether it’s backyard sports, pool time with the kids, or finally hitting those hiking trails, summer’s a season of movement. But with all that extra activity comes an increased risk for strains, sprains, and good old-fashioned back pain.

Now here’s the thing—staying active is one of the best things you can do for your spine and your overall health. But it’s all about doing it smart.

Let’s start with sports. Whether you’re playing pickup basketball, swinging a golf club, or just tossing a football around with friends, your spine is involved in every move. That twisting, bending, and impact can put serious stress on your joints and muscles if your spine isn’t properly aligned.

If you’re feeling tightness in your lower back, stiffness in your neck, or even pain down your legs after being active—it’s your body waving a red flag.

The good news? You don’t have to sit out this summer. You just need to take care of your foundation: your spine.

One tip we always give our patients is to warm up and cool down properly. A few minutes of dynamic stretching before and after activity can make a world of difference. Think arm circles, lunges, hip openers—not just touching your toes and calling it good.

Hydration is also a big deal. Your spinal discs are mostly water. Staying hydrated helps cushion your joints and prevents stiffness.

Now let’s talk about kids and teens in sports. At Powers Chiropractic, we work with a lot of student athletes—football players, gymnasts, swimmers—you name it. These young bodies are still growing, and they’re more prone to misalignments, especially with repetitive movements and contact sports.

Regular chiropractic checkups during sports season can help prevent injuries and improve performance. When the spine is aligned, the nervous system works better, which means better coordination, quicker recovery, and fewer setbacks.

And hey, even if you’re not on a field or in a gym, summer activities like yard work, travel, or even sleeping in unfamiliar beds on vacation can take a toll on your back. So don’t ignore those little aches—they often lead to bigger problems later on.

Here at Powers Chiropractic, we offer care plans personalized to your lifestyle—whether you’re an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just trying to keep up with the grandkids. From spinal adjustments to rehab exercises, our goal is to keep you moving pain-free.
