Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Cory Powers from Powers Chiropractic right here in Omaha, and today I want to share something a little different with you. We’re going to talk about five spine facts that might just blow your mind. Trust me, after treating patients for years, I still find the human spine absolutely fascinating. So let’s dive in.

First off, did you know your spine has the same number of bones as a giraffe’s neck? Yep. Seven cervical vertebrae. That’s it. A giraffe with that incredibly long neck? Seven bones, just like you and me. The difference is their vertebrae are just much, much larger. I love sharing this one because it reminds us that we’re all built on the same basic blueprint. Pretty wild, right?

Now here’s number two. Your spine isn’t actually straight. I know we talk about posture and standing up straight, but when you look at your spine from the side, it has these beautiful curves. We call them the cervical curve, the thoracic curve, and the lumbar curve. These curves aren’t flaws… they’re features. They act like springs, absorbing shock when you walk, run, or jump. Without those curves, every step you take would send a jolt straight into your brain. Those curves are protecting you every single day.

Number three might surprise you. Your spinal cord doesn’t run the full length of your spine. Most people think it goes all the way down to the tailbone, but it actually stops around the first or second lumbar vertebra… that’s roughly at your belly button level. Below that, it’s a bundle of nerve roots we call the cauda equina, which is Latin for horse’s tail, because that’s exactly what it looks like. Just another reminder of how precisely engineered your nervous system really is.

Here’s number four. Between each vertebra, you have these gel-filled discs, right? Well, those discs actually change height throughout the day. When you wake up in the morning, you’re about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch taller than when you go to bed. Gravity compresses those discs during the day. At night, when you’re lying down, they rehydrate and plump back up. That’s why mornings are such an important time to move carefully and stretch gently. Your spine is literally waking up.

And finally, number five. This one’s my favorite. Your spine is strong enough to support hundreds of pounds of weight, but it’s also flexible enough to bend, twist, and move in multiple directions. That combination of strength and flexibility? That’s the key to a healthy spine. When one element gets out of balance… when you lose flexibility or when the supporting muscles weaken… that’s when we start seeing problems.

So what can you do with all this knowledge? Well, treat your spine with respect. Move regularly. Stretch daily. Strengthen those core muscles that support your spine. And listen to your body.
