Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Powers, and you’re listening to the Powers Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Omaha. Today I want to talk about something that comes up almost every single week in my practice. People walk through the door and they say, “Doctor Powers, I wasn’t sure about coming in because I heard that chiropractic is…” and then they fill in the blank with something they picked up from a friend, or the internet, or maybe just a general feeling of uncertainty. So today, we’re going to clear the air. We’re going to talk about what chiropractors actually do — and maybe just as importantly, what we don’t do.

Let’s start with the big one. A lot of people think that chiropractic is all about cracking bones. You know what I mean — they picture someone getting twisted around and hearing a loud pop and thinking, what on earth is happening in there? Here’s the thing… that sound is not your bones cracking. What you’re actually hearing is a release of gas from the joint space. Think of it like opening a soda can. Pressure builds up in the fluid around your joints, and when the joint moves through its full range of motion during an adjustment, that pressure releases and makes a popping sound. It’s completely normal, it’s harmless, and honestly — a lot of patients find it really satisfying. But here’s what’s interesting — the sound itself isn’t even the goal. The goal is restoring proper movement to a joint that’s been stuck or restricted. Whether you hear a pop or not, the work is still being done.

Now, the second myth I want to tackle is this idea that chiropractic is only for back pain. I hear this one constantly. Someone will come in for their low back, and after a few visits they’ll say, “Hey, my headaches are better too.” And they’re surprised. But when you understand what we actually do, it starts to make sense. The spine houses and protects your nervous system. Your nervous system controls everything — your muscles, your organs, your ability to heal and function. When there’s restriction or misalignment in the spine, it can create tension and interference that shows up in all kinds of ways. Neck pain, headaches, shoulder tension, even how well you sleep. Chiropractic care isn’t a cure-all — I want to be clear about that — but supporting healthy spine movement can have a real ripple effect on how your whole body feels and functions.

The third myth — and this one is important — is that once you start chiropractic care, you have to go forever. I understand why people think that. But here’s the truth. Care is always tailored to you. Some people come in with an acute issue, we address it, they feel better, and they’re on their way. Other people choose to come in regularly for maintenance, the same way you’d go to the dentist for cleanings even when your teeth don’t hurt. That’s a personal choice — not a requirement. My job is to give you the best care possible and help you make informed decisions about your own health. Period.

So what can you do starting today? First — pay attention to how you’re sitting. Most of us spend hours hunched over a screen, and that posture puts real stress on the spine. Try to sit up tall, keep your screen at eye level, and take short breaks to move around. Second — don’t ignore that nagging tension or stiffness. A lot of people wait until they’re in serious pain before they seek help. The earlier we catch something, the easier it usually is to address.

If you’ve been dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or just that constant feeling of tightness that never quite goes away — I’d love to see you. We’re right here in Omaha, and at Powers Chiropractic, we take the time to actually listen, do a thorough evaluation, and build a plan that makes sense for your life and your goals.
