The Connection Between Stress and Physical Pain

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Powers of Powers Chiropractic in Omaha explores the powerful and often overlooked connection between stress and physical pain. Most people think of stress as something that happens in the mind, but Dr. Powers breaks down exactly how stress manifests in the body—causing tension, inflammation, and chronic discomfort. You’ll learn why so many patients walk through the doors of Powers Chiropractic carrying physical symptoms that are deeply rooted in their stress levels. Understanding this mind-body connection is the first step toward lasting relief. If you’ve been dealing with unexplained aches and pains, this episode is a must-listen.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Powers from Powers Chiropractic here in Omaha, and today we’re talking about something that honestly affects almost every single person who walks through my door. We’re talking about stress — and more specifically, what stress actually does to your body. Because here’s the thing… most people think of stress as a mental thing. Something happening in your head. But the truth is, stress shows up in your body in very real, very physical ways. And once you understand that connection, a lot of things start to make a lot more sense.

So let me ask you something. Have you ever noticed that when you’re going through a really tough week — maybe work is overwhelming, or something’s going on at home — your neck gets tight? Or your shoulders feel like they’re up around your ears? Or that old back pain flares up out of nowhere? That’s not a coincidence. That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Here’s how it works. When your brain senses stress — whether that’s a real physical threat or just a looming deadline — it triggers what most people know as the fight-or-flight response. Your body releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Your heart rate goes up. Your muscles tighten. Your breathing gets shallow. All of that is your body preparing to protect you. Now, that’s a brilliant system when you actually need it. The problem is… most of us are living in that state almost constantly. And when your muscles are chronically tense, day after day, that’s when pain sets in.

The areas that tend to take the biggest hit are the neck, the upper back, and the shoulders. I see this every single day in the office. Someone comes in with tension headaches or a stiff neck, and when we start talking, it turns out they’ve been under enormous stress for weeks or even months. The muscles get tight, they pull on the joints of the spine, and that creates irritation, restriction, and pain. It becomes a cycle — the pain causes more stress, and the stress causes more pain.

Now, here’s what’s really interesting. Your spine and your nervous system are deeply connected. The spine literally houses and protects the spinal cord. So when stress causes muscle tension that affects spinal alignment, it can also interfere with how well your nervous system communicates throughout your body. That’s why chiropractic care can be so helpful — not just for the physical symptoms, but for helping your nervous system function the way it should.

So what can you actually do about this? A few simple things make a real difference. First — breathe. I know that sounds almost too simple, but intentional deep breathing actually signals your nervous system to calm down. Just a few slow, deep breaths throughout the day can take you out of that fight-or-flight state. Second — move your body. Even a short walk helps release muscle tension and gives those stress hormones somewhere to go. And third — pay attention to your posture, especially if you’re working at a desk. Stress and poor posture together are a really tough combination on your spine.

Now, when should you come see us? If you’re dealing with ongoing neck pain, tension headaches, upper back tightness, or just that general feeling of being wound up and achy — those are signs that your body is asking for some help. Chiropractic care is a really effective tool for breaking that stress-pain cycle. We work on restoring proper movement to the spine, easing muscle tension, and supporting your nervous system so your body can actually recover and reset.

And listen — you don’t have to be in severe pain to come in. A lot of our patients come in proactively, just to keep things moving well and stay ahead of the tension before it becomes a bigger problem. That’s honestly the best approach.
