The Importance of Body Awareness and Movement Patterns

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Powers Chiropractic podcast, Dr. Powers dives into a topic that often flies under the radar: body awareness and how your everyday movement patterns can quietly affect your overall health and wellbeing.

Many people go through their daily routines without realizing that the way they sit, stand, walk, and move may be contributing to pain, stiffness, or dysfunction over time. Dr. Powers breaks down what body awareness really means and why paying attention to how you move is a critical first step toward feeling and functioning better.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic discomfort or simply want to be more proactive about your health, this episode offers practical insight from a chiropractic perspective. Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Powers, and you’re listening to the Powers Chiropractic podcast, where we talk about real ways to help you feel better, move better, and live your healthiest life right here in Omaha. Today I want to talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough attention — and that’s body awareness. Specifically, how the way you move every single day might be quietly working against you. Stick with me here, because this one could be a real eye-opener.

So let me ask you something. Have you ever stood up from your desk and thought, wow, when did my back get so tight? Or maybe you’ve reached for something on a high shelf and felt that little twinge in your neck. You didn’t do anything dramatic. You weren’t lifting something heavy or playing a sport. You just… moved. And yet, there it was. That discomfort. That stiffness. That little warning signal your body was sending you.

Here’s the thing — those moments aren’t accidents. They’re clues. And they usually point to something called a movement pattern. Now, a movement pattern is simply the way your body habitually moves through everyday tasks. Getting up from a chair, turning your head while driving, picking something up off the floor. We all have these patterns, and most of us developed them without even realizing it.

Here’s what’s interesting. When those patterns are good — when your body is moving in a balanced, coordinated way — everything works together beautifully. Your muscles share the load. Your joints stay happy. Your spine stays supported. But when those patterns get out of sync… and they do for most of us over time… certain muscles start overworking while others just kind of check out. And that imbalance? That’s where pain starts to creep in.

Now, this is where body awareness comes in. Body awareness is basically your ability to notice what your body is doing in space — how you’re sitting, how you’re standing, where you’re holding tension without even knowing it. Most of us are running on autopilot. We’re focused on our phones, our to-do lists, our kids, our grandkids. And that’s completely understandable. But when we’re not tuned in to how we’re moving, those little bad habits add up. Day after day, year after year.

Let me give you a simple example. A lot of people carry tension in their shoulders — shoulders creeping up toward their ears, especially when they’re stressed or concentrating. Over time, that tension can pull on the muscles in the neck and upper back, and before you know it, you’ve got chronic neck stiffness or headaches that just won’t quit. Sound familiar?

So what can you actually do about this? A few simple things to start with. First, do a body check-in a couple of times a day. Just pause for thirty seconds, take a breath, and scan from your head down to your feet. Are your shoulders relaxed? Is your jaw clenched? Are you sitting with your weight shifted to one side? Just noticing is the first step. Second, move more often. Staying in one position — even a good one — for too long is hard on your body. Set a reminder to get up and move every forty-five minutes or so. A short walk, a gentle stretch, even just standing up and sitting back down a few times makes a real difference. Third, pay attention to how you do everyday things. When you pick something up off the floor, do you bend from your back or from your hips and knees? Small adjustments in how you move can take a lot of stress off your spine over time.

Now here’s when I’d really encourage you to come in and see us. If you’ve noticed recurring pain or stiffness that keeps coming back — even after rest, even after trying stretches you found online — that’s a sign that something in your movement patterns or spinal alignment may need a closer look. At Powers Chiropractic, we don’t just focus on where it hurts. We look at the whole picture. Because lasting relief comes from understanding why it hurts in the first place.

Our goal is to help you get back to doing what you love — whether that’s keeping up with your grandkids, sleeping through the night, or just getting through your day without that nagging pain following you around.

You deserve to feel good in your body. And that’s exactly what we’re here for.
