Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Powers, and you’re listening to the Powers Chiropractic podcast — where we talk about real ways to feel better, move better, and live your healthiest life right here in Omaha.
Today I want to talk about something that a lot of active people completely overlook. And honestly, it’s one of the most important parts of any fitness routine. We’re talking about recovery time after exercise — why it matters, what happens in your body when you skip it, and what you can do starting today to feel better and move more freely.
Now, here’s the thing. When people come into our office dealing with nagging muscle soreness, joint stiffness, or that low back pain that just won’t quit — one of the first things I ask is, “Are you giving your body time to recover between workouts?” And you’d be surprised how often the answer is no.
We live in a go-go-go world. More is better, right? But when it comes to exercise, that mindset can actually work against you. Let me explain why.
When you exercise — whether it’s lifting weights, going for a run, or even doing yard work — you’re creating tiny amounts of stress on your muscles, joints, and connective tissue. That’s actually a good thing. That stress is what signals your body to get stronger. But here’s the key — your body doesn’t get stronger during the workout. It gets stronger during the recovery.
Think of it like this. Exercise is the spark. Recovery is where the real magic happens.
When you rest, your muscles repair those tiny tears. Your nervous system resets. Your joints get a chance to decompress and rehydrate. Your inflammation levels come back down. All of that takes time. And if you keep pushing before that process is complete — you’re not building yourself up. You’re actually breaking yourself down.
Now, here’s what’s interesting. Inadequate recovery doesn’t just mean sore muscles. Over time, it can lead to joint stress, postural changes, and the kind of cumulative strain that ends up sending people through our door wondering why their back or neck suddenly gave out — when really, it was a slow build-up over weeks or months.
So what does good recovery actually look like? A few simple things can make a huge difference.
First — sleep. I know, I know. Everyone says sleep more. But genuinely, this is when your body does its deepest healing. If you’re waking up stiff and achy every morning, that’s your body telling you something.
Second — hydration and gentle movement. A short walk, some light stretching — nothing intense. Just enough to keep circulation moving and help clear out the byproducts of a tough workout.
And third — pay attention to what your body is telling you. That persistent tightness in your lower back, that stiff neck that won’t loosen up — those aren’t things to push through. They’re signals worth listening to.
Now, here’s where chiropractic care fits in beautifully. One of the things we do at Powers Chiropractic is help your spine and joints stay aligned and moving properly — so your body can actually do the recovery work it’s designed to do. When joints are restricted or out of alignment, recovery slows down. Muscles have to compensate. Tension builds. And that cycle keeps going until something finally says enough.
Regular chiropractic care, especially alongside an active lifestyle, helps keep your body in a state where it can heal efficiently. We’re not just here for when things go wrong. We’re here to help you stay well.
If you’ve been pushing hard lately and something just doesn’t feel right — whether it’s back pain, neck stiffness, or just a general feeling of being run down — I’d love for you to come in and let us take a look. We’ll figure out what’s going on and come up with a gentle, natural plan to help you feel like yourself again.
You deserve to move freely. You deserve to feel good. And you don’t have to just push through it and hope for the best.

Dr Powers has been my chiropractor for several years. He's helped me sort thru options for surgery/ chiropractor care/physical therapy. I've had hip surgery, but he has continued to help my lower back and neck. I would highly recommend him

Powers Chiropractic is a five star establishment. Dr. Powers is amazing in his staff treat you like they’ve known you forever. I highly recommend them.
Dr Powers was very helpful after I injured my ribs and lat in a biking fall. I appreciated his expertise in how best to adjust me with my injury.
I booked an appointment online with ease and was seen the same day. I needed to be adjusted desperately and Dr. Powers and his staff were so friendly and caring. I was truly cared for from start to finish. Thank you so much for truly caring about my pain and helping me try to ease it.
Powers Chiropractic is the best. Dr. Powers is knowledgeable and caring. His staff is friendly. Their facility is clean and stylish. They even have a coffee bar in case you arrive early for your appointment. I used to think all chiropractors were the same. One your first visit you fill out a few forms, they ask where it hurts, and then they adjust your back. What I found at Powers Chiropractic was much different. First as part of his standard procedure Dr. Powers takes x-rays. I have been to plenty of chiropractors in the past with this same back issue and this is the first time that x-rays were done. Next scans were done to determine the health and functioning of my nervous system and spine. Afterwards Dr. Powers sat down with me to go through the results in detail. Then after both he and I understood the issues that were causing my pain, he performed spinal adjustments. The difference between Powers Chiropractic and others has to be experienced to be appreciated.
Always friendly and interested in helping you to feel better physically and mentally
Dr. Powers and his staff are so wonderful. My lower back has very little pain and a thousand times better than when I started.
From scheduling my initial visit to scheduling my follow up and everything in between it was a great experience. I got an appointment quickly and the staff and dr were all great. Explained everything that was done and also future treatments. I would highly recommend this office.
