When Should You See a Chiropractor? Warning Signs to Watch For

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Powers Chiropractic podcast, Dr. Powers tackles one of the most common questions he hears: how do you know when it’s actually time to see a chiropractor?

Dr. Powers walks listeners through the key warning signs that indicate something more than everyday soreness may be going on — and explains why most people wait far longer than they should before seeking care.

Whether you’re dealing with nagging discomfort or sudden pain, this episode gives you a practical framework to help you decide when it’s time to reach out to a chiropractor like Dr. Cory Powers at Powers Chiropractic in Omaha.

Hey there, welcome back. I’m Doctor Powers, and you’re listening to the Powers Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Omaha. Today we’re talking about something I get asked all the time — how do you actually know when it’s time to see a chiropractor? Like, is this just normal soreness, or is something going on that I should get checked out? It’s a great question, and honestly, most people wait way longer than they should. So today I want to walk you through some of the warning signs your body might be sending you — and what they could mean.

Now, here’s the thing. Your body is constantly communicating with you. Pain is not just an inconvenience — it’s information. It’s your nervous system waving a flag and saying hey, something needs attention. The problem is, a lot of us are really good at ignoring those flags. We take some ibuprofen, we push through, we tell ourselves it’ll go away on its own. And sometimes it does. But sometimes it doesn’t — and that’s when a small problem turns into a bigger one.

So let me break this down for you. The first warning sign I want you to pay attention to is pain that just won’t quit. If you’ve had neck pain, back pain, or headaches that have been hanging around for more than a week or two — that’s your body telling you it needs more than just rest. Persistent pain usually means there’s some underlying tension, misalignment, or muscle imbalance that isn’t going to resolve on its own. And the longer you wait, the more your body starts to compensate. You start moving differently to protect that sore spot, and before you know it, you’ve got pain in a whole new area because of it.

Here’s another big one — sharp or shooting pain that travels down your arm or your leg. A lot of people come in and describe it as a burning or tingling feeling, maybe even numbness. If that sounds familiar, there’s a good chance a nerve is being irritated somewhere along the spine. In my office, I hear people describe this in their legs pretty regularly — that classic radiating discomfort that shoots down through the backside or into the foot. That kind of symptom deserves a professional evaluation sooner rather than later.

Now, here’s what’s interesting — a lot of people don’t realize that chiropractic care isn’t just for back pain. If you’re getting frequent headaches, if your range of motion feels limited — like you can’t turn your head all the way to check your blind spot — or if you feel stiff every single morning and it takes a while to get moving, those are all signs that your spine and joints might not be functioning the way they should. These aren’t just signs of getting older. These are patterns we can often address really effectively.

So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention. Start noticing when your pain happens, how long it lasts, and what makes it better or worse. That information is incredibly helpful when you come in for an evaluation. Second, don’t just mask the pain. Pain relievers have their place, but if you’re taking them regularly just to get through your day, that’s a sign something deeper is going on. And third, move. I know it sounds counterintuitive when you’re hurting, but gentle movement — even just a short walk — helps keep things from locking up.

And listen, if any of those warning signs I mentioned resonate with you — the lingering pain, the tingling, the stiffness, the headaches — please don’t wait. Come in and get evaluated. Our goal at Powers Chiropractic is never to put you on some endless treatment plan. It’s to figure out what’s actually going on, explain it to you clearly, and help you get back to feeling like yourself again. Sometimes that takes a few visits. Sometimes people feel a difference right away. Every person is different, and that’s exactly why we start with a thorough evaluation.

You deserve to feel good in your body. That’s not too much to ask. And most of the time, the things people have been living with for months — sometimes years — are very addressable when you actually get them looked at.

Alright, that’s going to do it for today. Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me.
