From minor aches to chronic discomfort, knee pain can have various causes, including injuries, arthritis, or simple wear and tear over time. Ignoring the pain can lead to further complications, making it essential to address the issue early. The good news is that with the right approach—whether through targeted exercises, lifestyle adjustments, or professional treatments—you can restore mobility and reduce discomfort.
There are many effective ways to manage knee pain and improve overall joint health. From strengthening exercises and stretching routines to proper footwear and weight management, small changes can make a big difference. Understanding the best strategies for pain relief and prevention can help you stay active, move comfortably, and enjoy the activities you love without limitation.
Understanding Knee Pain: What’s Going On?
Before diving into treatment options, it’s important to understand the possible causes of knee pain. Your knee is a complex joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia), and it also includes the kneecap (patella). Several factors can contribute to knee pain, including:
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis that affects the knee, leading to the breakdown of cartilage and causing pain and stiffness.
Ligament Injuries: Sprains or tears to the ligaments in the knee, such as the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or MCL (medial collateral ligament), can lead to swelling, pain, and instability.
Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the knee, often due to overuse, can result in pain and discomfort, especially during physical activity.
Meniscus Tears: The meniscus is a cartilage structure in the knee that acts as a cushion. Tears in the meniscus can lead to sharp pain and swelling.
Patellar Maltracking: This occurs when the kneecap doesn’t move properly within its groove, which can lead to discomfort, pain, and even a feeling of instability.
Overuse: Repetitive stress from activities such as running, cycling, or jumping can cause knee pain.
Knowing the underlying cause of your knee pain will help determine the best treatment plan. However, regardless of the cause, the good news is that there are many ways to address knee pain, alleviate symptoms, and get back to doing the things you love.
Treatment Options for Knee Pain in Omaha
If you’re dealing with knee pain, there are several approaches you can take to help relieve discomfort, improve mobility, and strengthen the muscles around the knee joint. The key to effective treatment is to take a comprehensive approach that combines rest, rehabilitation, and sometimes professional intervention.
1. Rest and Ice: The First Step in Recovery
When you first experience knee pain, one of the best things you can do is rest the affected knee. Avoid activities that put stress on the joint, such as running or jumping. It’s also essential to apply ice to reduce swelling and inflammation. Try using an ice pack for 15-20 minutes every two to three hours during the first 48 hours of pain.
Rest and ice can be especially beneficial for acute injuries like sprains, meniscus tears, or after a hard workout. However, it’s important not to rest for too long – complete inactivity can lead to stiff joints and weakened muscles. After the initial inflammation has gone down, it’s important to start moving the knee gently to maintain flexibility and range of motion.
Chiropractic treatment isn’t just for back and neck pain—it can also be highly effective for knee pain. Chiropractors in Omaha focus on aligning the spine and joints, which can relieve pressure on the knee and improve overall function.
Joint Adjustments – Gentle chiropractic adjustments can improve knee alignment and mobility.
Spinal Alignment – Correcting spinal misalignments can reduce stress on the knees.
Soft Tissue Therapy – Techniques like myofascial release and trigger point therapy can help relieve tension and pain.
Rehabilitation Exercises – Chiropractors may recommend strengthening exercises to support knee stability.
3. Physical Therapy: Rebuild Strength and Flexibility
Physical therapy is a crucial part of recovering from knee pain. A physical therapist can help you improve your knee strength, flexibility, and range of motion. They will design a personalized rehabilitation program tailored to your condition, which may include exercises to:
Strengthen the quadriceps: These are the muscles in the front of your thigh that help stabilize the knee joint.
Increase flexibility: Stretching the muscles around the knee, such as the hamstrings, calves, and hip flexors, can reduce tension and improve your ability to move without pain.
Stabilize the knee: If your knee pain is caused by instability or misalignment, strengthening the muscles around the joint can help improve its function and prevent future injuries.
Improve balance: Balance exercises can help restore normal movement patterns and prevent falls.
Consistent physical therapy can make a significant difference in relieving knee pain and preventing further issues.
4. Medications and Supplements: Managing Pain and Inflammation
For some individuals, medications can help manage knee pain and inflammation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen are commonly used to reduce pain and swelling. These are often recommended for short-term use, as they can have side effects if taken long-term.
In addition to traditional pain relievers, there are a variety of supplements that may help support knee health. Some popular options include:
Glucosamine and Chondroitin: These supplements are believed to support joint health by promoting cartilage repair and reducing inflammation.
Turmeric/Curcumin: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric or its active compound curcumin can help alleviate joint pain.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil, these healthy fats have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, including the knees.
Always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplements to ensure they’re safe for you, especially if you’re on other medications.
5. Injections: Relief for Chronic Pain
For more severe knee pain, particularly for individuals with osteoarthritis or significant cartilage loss, injection treatments may offer relief. Some common types of knee injections include:
Corticosteroid Injections: These injections contain powerful anti-inflammatory medications that can help reduce swelling and pain in the knee joint. They may provide temporary relief for a few weeks or months.
Hyaluronic Acid Injections: This treatment involves injecting a gel-like substance into the knee joint to improve lubrication and reduce friction. It’s often used to treat knee osteoarthritis.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP involves drawing your blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting it back into the knee. The platelets help promote healing and tissue regeneration.
These injections may not be a long-term solution, but they can help manage pain while you work on strengthening the knee and improving your mobility.
6. Surgery: A Last Resort for Severe Cases
If conservative treatments haven’t provided relief, and if knee pain is severely impacting your quality of life, surgery may be considered. Some common surgical procedures for knee pain include:
Arthroscopy: This minimally invasive procedure involves making small incisions and using a camera to view and repair damaged cartilage or remove damaged tissue.
Knee Replacement Surgery: For severe arthritis or significant joint degeneration, knee replacement may be necessary. This involves removing the damaged knee joint and replacing it with a prosthetic.
Surgery is typically reserved for cases where other treatments have not been effective, and your doctor will carefully evaluate whether it’s the best option for you.

Chiropractic has been an important part of my life since I was born. I was probably 10 years old when I decided that I would follow in the footsteps of my grandpa and my uncle and be a chiropractor–
Growing up in our family, it was understood that a properly functioning spine and nervous system were crucial to the body functioning at it’s best. Chiropractic adjustments were always the first response to injuries or illnesses. Medicine had it’s place, but we understood that sometimes it had it’s limitations.

Powers Chiropractic is the best. Dr. Powers is knowledgeable and caring. His staff is friendly. Their facility is clean and stylish. They even have a coffee bar in case you arrive early for your appointment.
I used to think all chiropractors were the same. One your first visit you fill out a few forms, they ask where it hurts, and then they adjust your back. What I found at Powers Chiropractic was much different.
First as part of his standard procedure Dr. Powers takes x-rays. I have been to plenty of chiropractors in the past with this same back issue and this is the first time that x-rays were done. Next scans were done to determine the health and functioning of my nervous system and spine. Afterwards Dr. Powers sat down with me to go through the results in detail. Then after both he and I understood the issues that were causing my pain, he performed spinal adjustments. The difference between Powers Chiropractic and others has to be experienced to be appreciated.
From scheduling my initial visit to scheduling my follow up and everything in between it was a great experience. I got an appointment quickly and the staff and dr were all great. Explained everything that was done and also future treatments. I would highly recommend this office.
Great service! Dr. Cory knows his stuff. All staff friendly and willing to help accommodate patients with special needs. Online appointment system is easy to use. Location is easy to get to. A+ all around
Dr Powers has really helped me with my Verdigo problem and continues to help with adjustments on my neck. He is very considerate and knowledgeable. I also enjoy talking to him!!
Dr. Powers and his staff are truly wonderful! Their patients are their top priority! You can can in any time you need without an appointment! He adjusts infants too. Not many know how important the cranial adjustment is for a newborn. My son at age 5 was told his spine was curving and needed a specialist. Dr. Powers worked on him for several weeks and corrected the problem. His hip or something was out of alignment causing one leg to be slightly shorter than the other. My son was 5 and LOVED to go see Dr. Powers! He is wonderful with kids. 18 years of being his patient and always the first person I recommend family and friends to.
I've been coming to Powers Chiropractic every two weeks for maintenance care for many years, and I couldn't be happier with the care I've received. If something comes up between visits, Nicole and Lauren always go above and beyond to get me on the schedule as quickly as possible so Dr. Powers can get me feeling better.
Dr. Powers has always focused on keeping me mobile, healthy, and active, and that commitment shows in every visit. I always leave the office feeling refreshed, aligned, and cared for—like I've just received a warm hug from my best friend. The entire team is professional, welcoming, and genuinely invested in their patients' well-being. I highly recommend Powers Chiropractic to anyone looking for exceptional chiropractic care!

I am so grateful to have found Cory and his team. It has been challenging to find someone that is attentive to my needs and remembers my previous visits. As I get older, work out and run my remodeling company, I am finding that my body needs more than just a "gentle" adjustment and Cory knows this. I have visited many different practices and feel blessed to have settled in here.
Dr Powers has been my chiropractor for several years. He's helped me sort thru options for surgery/ chiropractor care/physical therapy. I've had hip surgery, but he has continued to help my lower back and neck. I would highly recommend him
I have a three generation household and Powers take care of all of us. Nicole is so warm and friendly. Dr.Powers is a very good listener and goes above and beyond to help make us feel better. I highly recommend their office. I have been to many other chiropractors. So far they're the BEST.
From my first visit, I was impressed with Nicole and the Dr. Powers, who took the time to make me feel comfortable with this process and provided an additional level of self care routines between visits. Initially visited because of a sciatic nerve pinch. I had a trip overseas in 5 weeks. By the time I had to get on that 14 hour flight, I was well mended, no pain and was able to enjoy the vacation time. Overall great place to go.

My husband and I have been coming to Dr. Powers for a little over 2 years. We were recommended to him from one of our great friends, and we are beyond thankful for that. I had my arm and hand go completely numb while driving long distance and it was because my neck was extremely tight and needed adjustment. It was scary but Dr. Powers (and Nicole) made us feel comfortable, relaxed, and like we were in the right hands. With regular treatment from Dr. Powers, I haven’t had that issue any longer. My husband had a very physical job and Dr. Powers has always compassionately helped with all of our concerns, including shoulders, feet, ears, wrists, and so on. Dr. Powers does adjustments on pregnant people also, which is especially helpful for low back and hip pain. Nicole is always so warm and friendly, and we have always been greeted with a smile. We always feel welcome, and usually feel better after leaving. We feel confident in the care being provided. The kind, accommodating, professional demeanor of Dr. Powers and Nicole keep us coming back. Highly recommend Powers Chiropractic!
Dr. Powers has been my chiropractor since 1999. He has always been thorough and effective in dealing with my various injuries. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
Dr Powers is a blessing not only to me but to everyone who goes to him. I have been seeing him for 20+ years. As we age our body and needs change. From sports to weekend warrior to yard work , my body takes a beating and Dr Powers is always available. Check him out, you wont be disappointed.
Dr. Powers has always treated me as one of his own. I've never felt like I was only a cash cow to him. Whether was the spine, knee, shoulder, ears, sinuses, a muscle tear or an ankle, he's treated or counseled me on it.<br>There are some chiropractors out there who don't care that much, but he's one of the good ones.
They are always very accommodating and easy to get into most of the time. I have been going there for years and they are close to being like family to me at this point.
I have been a patient of Dr. Powers now for almost three months. I was referred from a good friend.<br>I have a history of lower back problems but hadn't had any for a few years. Around Middle of August I had to go to the ER because of excruciating pain and couldn't use my left leg properly. They gave me a bunch of pain pills and a CAT scan and an appointment with a neurosurgeon. My primary had scheduled a MRI.<br>I called Powers chiropractic and Nicole scheduled me to come in the next day. From the moment I met Dr. Powers I instantly got good vibes from him and could tell he was a caregiver. He took some x-rays, gave me tens therapy and some direction. It took a few weeks to get the MRI and then a few more to meet the neurosurgeon, all the while Dr. Powers was keeping me grounded during this very confusing time.<br>Between waiting for appointments with doctors and surgeons and waiting for insurance to approve injections Dr. Powers kept adjusting me regularly and I kept walking and doing my own PT.<br>According to the MRI, my l3 disc is herniated and compressing one of the nerve roots that controls my left leg, thing is though, 3 months later and most of my pain is gone and I have regained mobility and a good deal of the strength without any injections or surgery.<br>My journey with this situation is far from over, we are still waiting to find the right surgeon. Powers chiropractic has been my rock and my guiding light through this entire ordeal!<br>I've been trying to decide for a few weeks how to properly give a review, today I just decided to tell it like it has happened. In the past I've had good and bad experiences with chiropractors. I just want to say that my experience with Powers chiropractic has been 100% positive! Dr. Powers is the real deal, he is a true caregiver! Nicole is the most polite, authentic and helpful person. I look forward to my visits. I can't thank them enough for the help they've given me!!
Dr. Powers is an excellent chiropractor and is interested in your overall health. I recently inquired about some symptoms I’ve been having and he took the time to locate a specialist in that area that he would stand behind. They are very flexible with scheduling and Nicole is awesome at sending reminders about your appointments. Highly recommend this team!
I found Dr. Powers from Google reviews and I'm glad that I did. I've been seeing him for about two years, and it has made a major improvement on my daily routine without having back pain all the time. I would recommend him to anyone.
Awesome staff and amazing doctor that create a family atmosphere. Started there with chronic lower back pain, and am now pain free. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great chiropractic experience with a doctor that legitimately cares about you and your well being.
